Recently, Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. It is announced that the industry's first rectangular ambient light sensor that complies with the EC-Q100 standard -VEML4031X00 - has been launched. The Vishay VEML4031X00 integrates ALS and highly sensitive infrared (IR) photodiodes, and adopts an opaque 4.38mm x 1.45mm surface mount package with a thickness of only 0.6mm. The width of this device is only half that of the previous generation product, making it easier to integrate into space-constrained designs, such as borderless central control displays.

The spectral sensitivity of the automotive-grade sensor released recently is comparable to that of the human eye, enabling high-precision measurement. Meanwhile, its infrared channel allows for the distinction of light sources. The ambient light detection range of VEML4031X00 is from 0 lx to 172,000 lx. It does not saturate under daylight conditions, and its high sensitivity of 0.0026 lx/ct enables the device to be placed behind a dark cover slip.

The operating temperature range of VEML4031X00 is -40 to +110 °C, and it can be used for display backlight control, infotainment systems, rearview mirror dimming, internal lighting control systems, and flat view displays. Among these applications, this sensor supports an easy-to-use I²C bus communication interface and provides an interrupt function.

The VEML4031X00 supports A power supply voltage range of 2.5V to 3.6V, an I²C bus voltage range of 1.7V to 3.6V, and a typical turn-off current value as low as 0.5 μA. These devices comply with the RoHS standard, are halogen-free, and meet the Vishay green standard. According to J-STD-020, their humidity sensitivity is at level 2a and the storage time in the workshop is four weeks.

Samples of the new ambient light sensor are now available and mass production has been achieved. The order cycle is 14 weeks.
