St 65W GaN converters offer space-saving power solutions for cost-conscious applications

St's VIPerGaN65D flyback converter is packaged in SOIC16 and can be used to design small, cost-effective power supplies, adapters and USB-PD (Power delivery) fast chargers with a maximum output power of 65W and an input voltage of universal grid voltage.
This quasi-resonant off-line converter integrates a 700V GaN (gallium nitride) transistor with optimized gate drivers and typical safety protection features, lowering the technical threshold for improving power density and energy efficiency with wide-band gap technology. The highest switching frequency of GaN power transistors is 240kHz, the switching loss is very small, and can be used with small flyback transformers and passive components, as well as low cost small circuit boards.
The VIPerGaN65D comes in a more traditional SO16n narrow-body package, while the rest of the VIPerGaN family comes in a 5mm x 6mm DFN package.
The converter adopts zero voltage switching technology, which can adjust the valley bottom synchronization delay to ensure that the GaN transistor turn-on time is always at the drain resonant valley bottom. The converter also has a dynamic blanking time function that maintains energy efficiency when the input voltage rises and ADAPTS to any line and load conditions to maximize overall energy efficiency. In addition, over the input voltage range, feedforward compensation minimizes input peak power variation.
The limit current of VIPerGaN65D is 3.5A, when the design uses the general input voltage of 85V to 265V, the maximum output power of the converter can reach 65W, if the input voltage is increased to 185V-265V, the maximum rated output power can reach 85W. The standby power is less than 30mW, which meets the requirements of the latest international energy efficiency standards.
VIPerGaN65D can be used to design small and inexpensive fast chargers and adapters, and can be used as an auxiliary power source for washing machines, dishwashers, coffee makers, televisions, set-top boxes, digital cameras, portable audio players, wireless shavers and other devices. It is also used as an auxiliary power source for desktop computers and servers, building and home automation equipment, electricity meters, home and building lighting, and air conditioning.
The VIPerGaN65D incorporates a SENSEFET transistor (current detection power MOSFET) to provide accurate current detection for optimal energy efficiency and trigger system safety protection mechanisms, minimizing bill of material costs. Built-in safety features include overcurrent protection, output overvoltage protection, input voltage feedforward compensation, input high/undervoltage protection, input overvoltage protection, output overload protection, output short circuit protection, and thermal shutdown. All safety features are automatically restarted, and the converter also uses frequency jitter technology to suppress EMI interference.
The reference design EVLVIPGAN65DF helps accelerate the development of power supply projects based on VIPerGaN65D. EVLVIPGAN65DF circuit board integrated converter chip, secondary synchronous rectifier circuit and ST SRK1001 adaptive controller, to provide developers with a 24V, 65W power supply, and equipped with perfect safety protection function, peak energy efficiency is greater than 93%.
The VIPerGaN65D is available now in a SOIC16 narrow-body package with a minimum order of 1000 tablets.
