Atmel has a total of three series of microcontroller AT89 AT90 AT91. AT89 is a single chip computer with 51 cores as standard. It is an improved 51 microcontroller. For example, the standard 8051 MCU does not have a 20-pin package chip. However, AT89C2051 AT89C4051 is a 20pin package of single-chip computers. It is mainly to omit the P0 port and P2 port of the original 51 MCU, and then improve some functions. It can be considered that they are simplified 51 microcontroller, more suitable for beginners to learn. There are many models of AT89. For example, AT89C51 AT89S51 AT89C52 AT89S8252(the latter several are actually 8052 MCU, but are compatible with the 8051 instruction system, just add some functions, it can also be considered as 51 series of MCU). For AT89 series single-chip microcomputer are FLASH single-chip microcomputer, the number of burning at least 1000 times more (data manual, the actual estimate is more than 4000) as long as the chip with the word "s" single-chip microcomputer can support ISP(online burning). AT89C51ND1X series chip is a DSP+MCU hybrid solution specially developed for embedded multimedia applications in mp3 industry. With this chip MP3 integrated USB, MMC embedded very small system software, fully functional with USB function only 15K bytes of firmware code. This MP3 decoder and hardware interface controller is very low power consumption. The AT90 series microcontroller mainly corresponds to the AVR microcontroller (which is the most important microcontroller of Atmel). The AVR is divided into three gears. Attiny series, AT90 series, ATmega series. Corresponding to AVR in the low, mid-range and high-end single-chip computers. Now the AT90 series MCU has been transformed to the Attiny series and ATmega series. All AVR microcontrollers support ISP. And AVR MCU is a RISC (reduced instruction) type MCU. 51 Single chip microcomputer is CISC (centralized instruction) type single chip microcomputer. The function of AVR microcontroller is much stronger than 51. AT91 series microcontroller mainly corresponds to the high-end 32-bit ARM microcontroller. Generally, ARM7 core is used, ARM is now the mainstream MCU in embedded system 32-bit.
On January 20, 2016, Microchip signed an agreement to acquire Atmel. Atmel said Microchip's proposed acquisition was better than the company's previous deal with Dialog Semiconductor. After Atmel announced that Microchip Technology had offered a higher price of $8.15 per share in cash and stock, Dialog said it would not raise its bid again. Microchip Technology announced that the equity value of its acquisition of Atmel Atmel is approximately $3.56 billion. Atmel had also attracted interest from California chipmaker Cypress Semiconductor. Several media outlets reported last year that Atmel was considering a number of strategic options, including a sale. The global semiconductor industry was consolidating last year as margins came under pressure. For example, NXP Semiconductors bought Freescale for $11.8 billion, INTEL Intel bought Altera for $16.7 billion, AVAGO Avwar High-tech's $37 billion acquisition of Broadcom is set to close on February 1, Microchip acquired Micrel for $839 million last August. Microchip is one of the few major microprocessor (MCU) vendors not using the ARM core, and pioneered its own PIC microcontroller architecture. Atmel offers ARM capabilities, so a merger with Microchip would seem to make more strategic sense for Atmel than a merger with Dialog.
